The Black and White Art of Carol Sanna

When viewing Carol Sanna’s work we are on a journey into a peaceful and beautiful world; a world filled with delicate strength and intricate power.  Her black and white photography is a delightful array of various subjects all related to her deep connection to nature.  The underlying theme throughout her body of work is: Patterns in Nature.

Sanna’s sensitivity to the interaction of images is defined by the play of light and shadow.  She sees interesting textures, angles and lighting.  While we may simply see an old fence or a stand of trees, she looks deeply into subject to see what her heart has to say.  When lining up a shot, “I ask: what is this picture about?  What am I trying to say? If I can’t find an answer to these questions, I walk away.”

She goes on to say, “Seeing is what I do. Patterns dance across my vision … the world is transformed into patterns; patterns in the purest form of black and white images.”  For her photography is a journey: “a journey in learning; learning the skills to produce a perfectly rendered image on photographic media.”  And learn these skills she has.  Each photograph demonstrates this well polished skill. Each shot presents its own challenge and Sanna has developed the discipline and capability to meet it.

Using large and medium format cameras she makes forays into various settings. Her goal is to capture the images that have bared their secrets to her.  Photographing in natural light she might expose the shot through filters to better render her vision oft he print.  Once that is done, she further works in the darkroom, keying the scene and exposure to bring out tonal detail. She uses the highest archival values with chemicals being carefully monitored, as well as expert paper handling and processing all to ensure the longevity of her prints. Thus her work can be enjoyed for many years to come.
