Carol Sanna’s Journey

“When I walk with my camera, I do not seek images.” Carol Sanna tells us, “They find me.”  She is on a journey: journey into black and white photography. Her journey has been long and far, and she has far yet to go.

A transplant from Wisconsin, Sanna is currently living in New Mexico. She has traveled extensively and has taken photographs all over the country but especially in the Western States.  While she is inspired by landscapes, she specializes in  intimate scenes, singling out a piece of the landscape to reveal the hidden soul of her subject.  Intrigued by the uniqueness of the objects, she draws us into to a new world. In a photograph of desert sand, we can virtually feel the grit.

"My journey is a physical journey in traveling places to discover these images. “Sanna tells us, “Experiencing the beauty of our surroundings is exhilarating.”  She finds joy in following the lines, circles and patterns presented to her.

Sanna's work displays her fascination with water, sand, and fences, meandering across sea shores.  Weathered buildings, piers, and the ocean are favorite subjects.  Wisconsin and neighboring Canada displays the purity of snow .  Their farms attract Sanna, providing opportunities to demonstrate the beauty of functionality and, of course, their closeness to nature and the land.

Traveling south, she records Utah’s scenes as a witness to nature as sculptor: creating interesting forms in its landscape.  Arizona’s arid climate and bright sun fashion enthralling shapes. Antelope canyon with its twisted rock chiseled by water and wind create the warmth of the womb.  The state’s cactus take on a riot of unique forms meant to preserve life in this unforgiving environment.

Moving west Sanna explored Death Valley; its naked mountains displaying their skeletons and shifting sand dunes. By contrast Yosemite provides lush, riotous beauty beyond belief.

Everywhere on her journey there are trees, eager to divulge their time worn secrets. Waterfalls display flowing patterns captured in a moment in frozen motion.  Machinery and tools are rich fodder for her camera as well.  Fences uniquely stand for defined boundaries as they loan their symmetry to all venues whether along the beach or hillsides or across fields.

Carol Sanna’s insatiable appetite for rendering images and her capability to craft her art gives the purchaser an almost bewildering but pleasant choice of viewing  It is a rich and wonderful display of black and white creativity.
